Facilties in the City
Ritto Museum of Folk History (Ritto Rekishi Minzoku Hakubutsukan)
A museum opened in 1990, located immediately south of the Ritto Interchange on the Meishin Expressway. This area groups together several cultural facilities of Ritto City, such as the Ritto Public Library and the Ritto Nature Observation Forest.
The Komasaka Stone Buddhist Relief (replica) is displayed as the symbol of the museum in the front of the entrance hall. Visitors to the museum are welcomed by these huge stone Buddhist statues as big as the originals on Mt. Konzeyama in the south of Ritto City.
There are two exhibition rooms. In the first room, "Ritto's History and Folk Culture" introduces the history of Ritto over the course of time, from the Jomon Period through the modern era, as well as the folk activities. The second exhibition room displays various exhibits throughout the year, focusing on different themes. Feel the history of Ritto in the wide range of items such as the Buddhist and Shinto art which represent the museum, archeological documents clearly illuminating the ancient form of the city, works from the culture which flowered alongside the Tokaido and Nakasendo Roads, and works from the Tsujimura Foundry.
In addition, the museum offers chances to learn through experiencing history and the old ways of living through hands-on experiences such as cooking in an old-style kitchen and trying out different types of work from long ago at the reconstructed former Nakajima House (Registered Tangible Cultural Property of the country) in the vicinity.
