At the time of the 1970 Expo, the basement of the Tower of the Sun housed a grandiose Theme Exhibition.
In this zone, you can feel the atmosphere of the Expo's Theme Pavilion.
At the center is a piece by Taro Okamoto, a giant mask named the 〈Sun of the Underworld〉. The Theme Exhibition was adorned with masks and idols positioned all around.
After spectators visiting the Theme Pavilion experienced this mystical and occult space, they were drawn in to the interior of the Tower of the Sun.

Osaka '70 Expo Theme Pavilion's Subterranean Level Exhibition "Past: The World of Mystery"
The〈Sun of the Underworld〉Zone, situated before entering the Tower of the Sun, is a space where one can experience the atmosphere of the Subterranean Level Exhibition of the Expo, which was known as Past: The World of Mystery. The weltanschauung of the Theme Pavilion is communicated in a kaleidoscope of masks and gods, and images and lights.
Situated in the center is the〈Sun of the Underworld〉, which vanished without a trace after the closing of the Expo. This giant mask which Taro Okamoto created has been reconstructed for this exhibition. Deities and masks of the world are also displayed, furthering the Theme Exhibition.
